When I first started my quest, I had no idea where Singapore was. I knew it was a) far away b) they spoke English c) you can be caned if you vandalize property and d) gum is not allowed (music to my father's ears - after scraping gum off desks for 33 years).
Where is Singapore? Basically, the far east - due west! To get to Singapore, we are flying via Chicago to Hong Kong - in excess of 9,300 miles with a flight time of nearly 20 hrs. Once we get to Hong Kong, we will lay over for a few hrs and then get on a flight for another 3 hrs to get to Singapore. The time difference will be 13 hrs from Eastern Standard time. A long friggin way.
Geographically, Singapore is 8 hrs from Tokyo - south and a little further west. Directly to the north and accessible by waterway is Malaysia. Our weekend trip to Bangkok is a 2.5 hr flight - the shortest flight time we will encounter while over there. Also near Thailand is Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. I thought about going to one of those places for a vacation after work, but figured my mom would have a heart attack at the thought of me going to Vietnam or Cambodia. Besides that, I am sure I will be ready to come home to my little Chelsie Belle.
The island of Singapore is 26 miles long and 14 miles wide. Half the island is built up and half the island is parkland, farmland, etc - the farmland is in the center of the island. The population is growing, and the island is not. Additionally, there are 63 islands off the main island of Singapore. Current weather conditions as I blog are 82 and partly cloudy - humid, feels like 90. FANTASTIC - it was nice of the folks in Singapore to say that January was a good time to come. I am heartbroken to miss 4 weeks of winter - NOT.
Hopefully now everyone has a better idea of where Singapore is. :) Hope everyone is doing well and I will continue to keep you up to date and provide some more interesting details about Singapore. If you have any questions about Singapore, let me know and I will try to answer them!
